ESRI Roads and Highways

TCDS Extension - ESRI Roads and Highways

Many agencies are looking to ESRI Roads and Highways (R & H) to manage their networks. R & H provides tools to track network changes over time and can provide an agency with a central place to store GIS data.

MS2 has worked with ESRI to design an extension for synchronization of GIS and traffic data to allow both TDMS and R & H to focus on what they do best.

There are two distinct components to the synchronization:

Traffic Stations
TDMS is used to maintain station list along with detailed traffic data associated with each traffic station. When a user creates a new station in TDMS with the R & H Extension, TDMS automatically queries R & H to get meta-data associated with the station such as: county, community, functional class, number of lanes, speed limit, etc. As that metadata changes over time, TDMS can automatically synchronize with R & H so TDMS traffic stations always have the latest metadata. TDMS also maintains a list of traffic stations inside R & H that can be used via R & H for any purpose.

Traffic Segmentation
State DOTs are responsible for reporting HPMS and Vehicle Miles Traveled statistics. This process requires mapping traffic station data to road segments. The R & H extension makes managing this process easier because many network changes, like minor cartographic changes or recalibrations, can be handled without requiring a user to review for impact to traffic data. This allows analysts to focus on reviewing only important changes to the network. TDMS also pushes a copy of the association between road segments and traffic stations to R & H that can be used via R & H for any purpose.

Why MS2?
